For Patricia Curren, the summer of 1978 begins with a devastating discovery an unfamiliar black pearl button in the bed she shares with her controlling husband, Jack. Seeking the courage to end her desolate marriage, Patricia spends a quiet summer alone on beautiful Kiawah Island. But when she meets Terry Sloan, a collegiate tennis player trying to go pro, their physical attraction sparks a slow burn toward obsession.
Once Patricia and Terry share closely guarded secrets from their pasts, they want more than a summer together. But their love soon fractures, as a potential sponsor takes an unusually keen interest in Terry—both on court and off. And when single, career-driven Lynn Hewitt arrives, other secrets must surface, including the one Patricia has kept from Terry all summer.
An intimate portrait of the folly of the human heart, Breaking and Holding explores buried truths that are startlingly unveiled. What’s left in their wake has the power not only to shatter lives…but to redeem them.
Breaking and Holding A Novel edition by Judy Fogarty Literature Fiction eBooks
"Breaking and Holding" is as heart-breaking as it is soulful. Patricia is a broken young woman who clings to the man who helped her when she was 7 (and he was an adult) and courted her when she was older. Jack is her rough, abusive, controlling husband. Patricia (or Tricia, the change in name representing the change within) finds out that he has cheated on her, and this revelation gives her the shove she needs to start trying to extricate herself from the relationship. She begins by staying at their beach house without him.The story is told from the first-person point-of-view of Lynn, Jack's assistant despite being equally qualified- she is held back by her gender. The POV is broken for about 10% of the book around the 50% mark for some unknown reason (editing issues?) but works for the first and later chapters. The time when it follows Tricia and Terry (a young dyslexic tennis player) without Lynn or Jack. We learn pretty quickly that Lynn was the affair Jack had but she is confidante to everyone she meets throughout the book, despite being emotionally empty herself (everyone relies on her and she must rely on herself).
The story ultimately is about Tricia and Terry's relationship and the obstacles they face, including adultery, alcoholism, and abuse. They were each broken at a young age and help the other to piece together what they have left. Tricia gains her strength and Terry gains some sanity. This is broken again when the truth comes out and they must part. They then put themselves back together, slowly and painfully, alone.
It's really an incredible book, filled with lives of pain, anguish, and suffering. It was at the same time hard and easy to read- easy because it flows and won't let you put it down; hard because it's emotionally very heavy. Overall, it's a read that I am convinced will stick with me but one which I won't need to read again (I doubt I will ever forget this story). It is quite a perspective and journey. I would recommend this book, but be prepared to have your heart bumped and torn and pieced together along the way. It's just that good.

Breaking and Holding A Novel edition by Judy Fogarty Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Judy Fogarty's Breaking and Holding is terrific.. jump on board for a roller coaster ride of a great summer read. Attention to period detail (she pop-checks Ol' Waylon, one of my favorite albums of the summer of '77) is spot-on. A cast of perfectly chosen (familiar) characters and enough twists and turns to make you dizzy, keep the story fresh! Chock full of "big serves", "deep shots" and without and "unforced error" B and H is seductive (literally and literarily). The writing does Coastal Ga and the SC Lowcountry proud! Buy, read and revel in Breaking and Holding!
Instead of going to a great free outdoor concert down town in beautiful April weather on a Friday night, I could not wait to get home to read "Breaking and Holding" by Judy Fogarty. I actually got the "End of Book Blues" big time, knowing I would finish it soon. When I started reading it, I was screaming out loud after the first sentence, then paragraph, then page, chapter. I was in AWE at her command of the language. She grabbed me from the get go, a "magnet draw", to read read read. It is not the type book I normally read, I like biographies and other books on touring the world, one place at a time. I have been waiting a fair amount of time to start reading it again. So glad this is not a library book I had to return. I cannot start reading at bedtime, cuz I will simply stay up WAY too late, as I am compelled to read read read. Can't wait for Judy's next book. Until then, I will read "Breaking and Holding" again. I'll let you know how the second read goes.
I loved so much about this novel the richly drawn characters; the gorgeous setting on the Carolina and Georgia coasts (as well as a peek at the NYC advertising world); the references to 1970s society, culture, tennis, music and feminism; and most of all, the gripping story of Tricia and Terry, two star-crossed lovers thwarted by fate, other people and their own pride and foibles.
The addition of a third main character, narrator Lynn, is an arresting choice on the author's part Lynn acts as a sort of Nick Carraway to Tricia and Terry's Daisy and Gatsby, allowing us to see them through her wise and somewhat jaundiced point of view. I found myself rooting as much for Lynn as for our hero and heroine.
During these turbulent times, when a woman's desire to reach her full potential is being questioned (again!) in American society, it's fascinating and refreshing to revisit an era when women's liberation was openly celebrated. We've come a long way, baby--or have we? Though they live in a time of disco and double knit suits, Lyn and Tricia's struggles and concerns feel current, fresh and engaging.
A terrific novel that combines page-turning drama with lush prose and insights into human nature--as well as delightful dips into 1970s kitsch--Breaking and Holding is one of my favorite reads of the past year.
Okay, this book "had me at hello!" Well, there really wasn't a 'hello' but seriously, it had me hooked from the very first chapter. I read that first chapter, it grabbed me, and then I was blown away by the last sentence. I wanted more! I immediately clicked over to and bought it. Breaking and Holding moved to the top of my TBR list.
This is a story filled with fascinating characters leading complicated lives in intertwined relationships. Sometimes I wasn't sure who the 'good' guys were and who were the 'bad' guys. Maybe everyone was a little bit of both? It definitely made for interesting reading. Everybody, and everything, was so complicated and tied together. How were the relationships going to unwind and play out? Getting through it all was so worth it!
This is Judy's debut novel and she has created an amazing story. I am excited to see what she writes next.
